Twenty families with children who suffer from asthma had a sports meeting in the lobby of Shanghai Children's Medical Center today.

Teamed with Project HOPE, an international non-governmental organization focusing on children’s health, the hospital launched this sports meeting for children receiving its community-based asthma management program.

Sport is part of measures to stabilize children’s asthma as proper physical exercise is good for asthmatic children, said Dr Yin Yong, director of the hospital’s respiratory department.

In order to make patients' treatment more convenient, and improve medical capability in grassroots facilities, Shanghai Children’s Medical Center began cooperation with 14 neighborhood health centers and five district-level hospitals in Pudong New Area in 2015, in order to set up standardized treatment plans and allow children to receive standard asthma treatment near their homes.

A regular patient transferring system was also established to allocate children to different levels of medical facilities in line with their disease and condition. So far, over 800 children have taken part in the community program and 80 percent have their condition under control, while their medical bills have dropped by 26 percent.

Experts said asthmatic children’s sports guidance will also be included in community programs for asthma treatment and control in order to improve the lung function and life quality of sufferers.
